USA crush Japan 5-2 to win Women's World Cup for record third time
6/7/2015
The United States have beaten Japan in the final of the Women's World Cup in Canada. The 5-2 scoreline included a hat-trick for Carli Lloyd and gave the Stars and Stripes a record third title.
The United States celebrated Independence Day weekend with a 5-2 win over Japan in Vancouver on Sunday.
World Cup holders Japan hardly touched the ball as the game got underway, conceding four goals in the first sixteen minutes.
The first came from a low hit corner by Megan Rapinoe which allowed Carli Lloyd to strike home from near the penalty spot after 3 minutes. In just a couple of minutes Lloyd was back on the scoresheet as she made the most of a low struck free-kick from Lauren Holiday to score her second goal in 5 minutes. They were the two fastest goals in Women's World Cup Final. Lloyd later received the Golden Ball award as the outstanding player of the tournament.
It was just a matter of minutes before Tobin Heath hit a ball forward which Lauren Holiday struck home on the volley to score the US team's third goal in 14 minutes.
Lloyd's most creative goal and her hat-trick came after 16 minutes when from near the halfway line she spotted keeper Ayumi Kaihori off her goal line. Lloyd hit a high shot goalwards which a desperate Kaihori could only touch at full stretch and see the ball go over her head into the net.
Lloyd nearly scored again within minutes - but just missed becoming the first person to score four goals in either a men's or a women's World Cup final.
Japan's Yuki Ogimi brought Japan back into the game as she scored by spinning away from the US defense in the 27th minute before finding the back of the net.
Japan's coach Norio Sasaki made two first half substitutions, bringing on the stars of the 2011 Final Homare Sawa and Yuika Sugasawa.
After half time Japan appeared to have recovered some of their composure as Aya Miyama hit a well struck free kick into the back of the net, just touched by Julie Johnston, to reduce the deficit.
But the three goal lead was restored for the US as Heath scored from close range after Morgan Brian had taken a corner which caused keeper Kaihori all kinds of problems.
Veterans Abby Wambach and Christie Rampone were brought on as late substitutes. Wambach was given the captain's armband and was one of the first to collect her medal and touch the trophy after the US win. They are the only team to have won the title three times.

Sasic rues missed penalty as US beat Germany
30/6/2015
It wasn't a shoot-out, but it was penalties that decided another Germany game in the Women's World Cup. The US overcame Silvia Neid's side with two goals in the second-half in Montreal.
The United States proved one step too far for Germany, as two second-half goals secured a place in Sunday's Women's World Cup final for the US. Celia Sasic missed a penalty after an hour, before a penalty from Carli Lloyd and late finish from Kelley O'Hara secured the win for the Americans.
It was loud in Montreal as the crowd, dominated by American fans, roared the teams out onto the pitch for what was an open, entertaining, but scoreless first half. The US dominated the early proceedings and Nadine Angerer was once again called upon to keep Germany in the game.
Her first save came after seven minutes. An inswinging corner found the head of Julie Johnston, but Angerer provided a superb reflex save to keep it out with her feet. On 14 minutes, Angerer saved again. Alex Morgan was played in behind the German defence, but couldn't beat the goalkeeper who closed down her angle to shoot with speed.
After Alexandra Popp and Morgan Brian clashed heads, with blood pouring from Popp's forehead, Morgan had another chance to score before half-time. Flicking the ball over Annike Krahn with style, Morgan curled her effort from a tight angle well wide as Angerer closed her down. Goalless at the break, but every bit as entertaining as expected.
Sasic scored from the spot in the quarterfinal, but she couldn't against Hope Solo in the semi
Penalties decide the game again
The second half began in opposite fashion to the first. Germany looked in control and were pressing forward in numbers. But as chances were beginning to be created, a goal was still yet to be found. Anja Mittag forced the first save of the match from Hope Solo after 53 minutes, with a measured header.
On the hour mark, Germany's real chance to score came. Julie Johnston looked to shield the ball back to Solo, but as she waited, Popp pounced. Johnston fouled and the penalty was given. Despite being the final player, Johnston was only booked. Again, it was Celia Sasic who stepped up and again, as she did against France, she went left. This time, too far left, and the ball dragged wide of Solo's post.
The chance was rued, as the US made Germany pay. Seven minutes later, the Americans had a penalty of their own. Annike Krahn, who turns 30 on Wednesday, haulted Morgan's run into the box - perhaps just before she had reached the box - and the foul was given. Captain Carli Lloyd did what Sasic couldn't and dispatched the spot-kick.
Dzsenifer Marozsan came off from the bench looking to take the game to extra-time, but it was another substitute who sealed the place in the final for the US. Lloyd did well to get to the by-line and cut-back for Kelley O'Hara who couldn't miss from two yards.
"The penalty was clearly outside of the box," said Germany Head Coach Silvia Neid. Nadine Angerer, was in a more reflective mood. "Of course we're disappointed, but if you look at the whole tournament, we can be proud," she said.
Germany's World Cup campaign comes to an end in disappointment, but on reflection, it was a fair result that sees the United States into Sunday's final. They will face either Japan or England, who play tomorrow in Edmonton for a place in the final.

WNT Delivers 3-0 Win Over Ireland on Mother's Day
10/5/2015
The U.S. Women’s National Team defeated the Republic of Ireland 3-0 on Mother’s Day in the first of its three-game Send-off Series ahead of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Before a sellout crowd of 18,000 at Avaya Stadium that included almost all of the players’ moms, the USA took the lead in the 42nd minute off a corner kick. Megan Rapinoe sent in the cross on the 10th of what would be 19 corner kicks and an Irish defender who was facing her goal tried to clear it away. The clearance smashed off the face of the far post defender and rolled back to Christen Press in the right side of the penalty box. Press settled and squared the ball to Abby Wambach, who swept the ball into the net for the game’s first goal and her 179th score. Minutes later Wambach would notch her 180th, heading in a Carli Lloyd cross to put the U.S. up 2-0. Lloyd pulled off a nifty dribble to beat her defender before chipping a far post cross to Wambach for goal 180.
In the second half, Julie Johnston scored the game’s third goal, also of a corner kick as she athletically redirected the ball into the near post. It was her third goal of 2015 and she has now scored in three consecutive games.
In one week, the team will be back on the field at StubHub Center in Carson, California, for the second game of the Send-Off Series, against Mexico at 6 p.m. PT live on FOX Spots 1 and Univision Deportes.

USA 'ready to play' to win World Cup
15/4/2014
America is heading to Brazil "ready to play" in the 2014 World Cup, and Vice President Joe Biden will be leading the cheers for the US to bring home the coveted trophy for the first time.
"When it comes to soccer, America is coming on," Biden assured Monday's audience at the State Department, where the 2014 World Cup trophy made its first stop in the United States as part of a global tour before heading later to Brazil.
"It's not historically been our game... but 25 million people in the United States play soccer, 80 percent of them are young people who will be players and fans for years to come," Biden said.
"The world should know, we're coming ready to play."
With only nine weeks remaining before the World Cup kicks off in Brazil, coach Jurgen Klinsmann's United States currently stands 13 in FIFA's rankings.
The White House announced that Biden would travel to Brazil in June to attend the World Cup, saying he would attend a match by the US side.
World Cup fever was "like a jolt of electricity that's felt all around the world," Biden said.
And he thanked the tour organizers for "bringing the World Cup trophy to the United States, and my expectation and hope is that it will come back soon in the hands of our players, rather than being delivered by someone else."
He was joined at the ceremony by Secretary of State John Kerry and former US national team members Cobi Jones and Julie Foudy, who are both sports envoys for the State Department.
"Athletes can be some of our finest ambassadors," Kerry said, hailing their part in past "diplomatic breakthroughs."
"All you need is a ball, and you go out and play. And it's remarkable how it captures the imaginations of young people everywhere," Biden said.
But he acknowledged that the US, drawn against Germany, Portugal and Ghana, faced a daunting fight to advance out of their World Cup group and forward in the competition.
"We have a strong squad, and strong spirit," Kerry assured, promising that if Brazil and the US face off against each other, "we will both be rooting to bring the cup back to our hemisphere."

San Jose Earthquakes stars Clarence Goodson and Chris Wondolowski were called to United States Men’s National Team duty by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Wednesday as the Americans prepare to take on Mexico in a 2014 FIFA World Cup tune-up.
The USA faces Mexico on Wednesday, April 2 at University of Phoenix Stadium (8 p.m. PT / ESPN, WatchESPN, Unimas) in their final match before convening for World Cup camp in May. San Jose’s duo will be available for the club’s match against the New England Revolution on Saturday, March 29 (7:30 p.m. PT / Comcast SportsNet California) before departing for camp the following day.
“Everyone knows the clock is ticking,” said Klinsmann. “This is a huge opportunity for our players to show where they are at and to make their case. USA rescue Mexico
15 October 2013
The final matchday of the CONCACAF qualifying Hexagonal was packed with the kind of high drama and exaggerated tension you only find in trashy novels and international football. Mexico were minutes away from missing out on their first FIFA World Cup™ since 1990 and Panama were as many minutes away from booking a place in next month’s intercontinental play-off with New Zealand. But, football being football, and with everything on the line, a pair of late goals from USA rescued Mexican hopes and sent Panama spinning into the doldrums. By comparison, Honduras were clinical in booking their direct passage.
Honduras did exactly what they needed to do in order to avoid complications, sealing up the third and final direct qualifying spot from the Hexagonal with a 2-2 draw over last-placed Jamaica in Kingston. The game, played on a soaked pitch and in front of precious few fans, began frenetically with a pair of goals inside the first three minutes. Carlo Costly opened the scoring from close-range in the first minute, but Je-Vaughn Watson scrambled home to even the scores after some dreadful defending at the other end. Maynor Figueroa took the lead again for Honduras with a deflected free-kick from distance in the 33rd minute before Rodolph Austin drew level once more for the home side, playing only for pride, near the hour mark.Honduras got the point they needed with a minimum of fuss, showing a maturity that has been a hallmark through the whole campaign.
All the drama came from the other two games. Mexico kept up their woeful form, losing out to Costa Rica2-1 in San Jose. Brian Ruiz, who has been outstanding for the Ticos in their run to Brazil 2014, wriggled into the box and opened the scoring with a sharp volley after 25 minutes. The Mexicans responded through Oribe Peralta, who slammed in off the crossbar three minutes later. But top Costa Rican striker Alvaro Saborio sealed all three points in the second-half with a free header to keep the Ticos’ perfect home record in the Hexagonal intact.
Panama would have been the team sliding into the fourth-place play-off spot, instead of Mexico, had they been able to hold on to their lead at home against an experimental USA. But, as they say, it’s a funny old game. The Panamanians, needing a win, opened the scoring through Gabriel Torres after 18 minutes. Michael Orozco tied it for the States in the second half, but Panama looked to be on their way when veteran striker Luis Tejada came off the bench to hit past Brad Guzan from a few yards out. The Canaleros, who have improved like no other CONCACAF team in the past decade, needed only to hold on for the last seven minutes to send Mexico out and keep their own dreams alive. However, USA – Mexico’s sworn arch-rival – came to El Tri’s unlikely aid. A pair of stoppage-time goals from Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson (his first for his new national team) banished the Panamanian fans and players to a pit of deep despair.

Chris Wondolowski scores twice
13 July 2013
Chris Wondolowski is making a case that he should be included in the United States roster when World Cup qualifying resumes in September.
Wondolowski - with his jersey name spelled correctly this time - scored two more goals to raise his total to five in two matches, and the Americans overcame a slow start to beat Cuba 4-1 Saturday and advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals.
Landon Donovan tied the score late in the first half when converted his second penalty kick of the tournament for his 53rd international goal. Joe Corona got his first international goal early in the second, and Stuart Holden made his first start in nearly three years for the U.S. (2-0), which has reached the quarterfinals of all 12 Gold Cups.
While Wondolowski has led or tied Major League Soccer in goals for three straight seasons, he hadn't scored for the national team in 11 appearances before getting his first in an exhibition win over Guatemala on July 5.
"I'm very confident in my play," Wondolowski said. "Just even getting the goals is so huge. I feeling more confident in my passing and in my touch and things like that where it's helping me to raise my level."
Wondolowski scored a first-half hat trick in Tuesday's 6-1 win over Belize, when his jersey was misspelled "Wondowlowski." He started this match on the bench, then replaced Herculez Gomez in the 58th and scored the final two goals in the 66th and 85th minutes. Superstitious, he had an extra "W" stitched on the inside of his jersey.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said the 30-year-old San Jose forward was a bit disappointed he wasn't in the starting 11.
"He's hungry, and he's working a lot," Klinsmann said. "It's not only that he has the instincts to know where the ball will be in the box. It's also the runs he makes to open things up. It opens channels for the other guys."

U.S. Takes Top Spot at Halfway Point With 2-0 Win against Panama
11 June 2013
The U.S. Men’s National Team extended their unbeaten streak in home World Cup Qualifiers to 24 straight games and took sole possession of first place in the Final Round with a 2-0 win against Panama in Seattle at CenturyLink Field.
Altidore tallied the game-winner in the 36th minute off a perfectly placed cross from Fabian Johnson, giving the striker his third goal in as many games. Altidore now has 16 international goals in his career, putting him ninth on the MNT all-time scoring list ahead of Cobi Jones. The goal was also his seventh in the Final Round of World Cup Qualifying, tying him with Landon Donovan for the most in MNT history.
Less than 20 minutes into the second half, Seattle Sounders FC striker Eddie Johnson gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead in front of his home crowd, with a deft finish after a long pass from Geoff Cameron. The goal was his 11th in 16 career World Cup Qualifying games, and puts him one behind all-time leaders Clint Dempsey and Donovan.
With a 3-1-1 record and three shutouts, the U.S. sits alone atop the Hexagonal with 10 points, two points clear of both Costa Rica and Mexico. This is the first time the U.S. has led the Final Round of World Cup Qualifying at the halfway mark since the 2002 qualifying cycle, and just the second time in the last five cycles.

Costa Rica's Soccer Federation Complains About Snow, Asks For Rematch Against U.S.

Last Friday, the United States won an epic World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica. The team did it outside Denver, under what were essentially blizzard conditions.
Now, on the eve of a Mexico vs. U.S. game in Mexico City, Costa Rica has lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, saying the "physical integrity" of the players and officials was affected and "ball movement became impossible." The country is now asking for a rematch of their 1-0 loss.
"On Monday FIFA said that it would analyze the protest and make a decision 'in due course.'
"In an e-mail, Sunil Gulati, president of the United States Soccer Federation, declined to comment on the protest. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann and players were scheduled to be available Monday afternoon. The most immediate concerns for the Americans will be trying to obtain their first World Cup qualifying victory in Mexico City and replacing Jermaine Jones in midfield. He sustained what team officials said was an ankle injury in the first half Friday that required two stitches. He was subbed out in the 83rd minute.
"After Friday's 1-0 victory, provided on a goal by Clint Dempsey in the 16th minute, Klinsmann called the match 'a nice snow battle' and said he would have done anything within his power to continue. And the American players noted that both teams played in the same conditions."
