LA Galaxy win over the San Jose 4-2
27/5/2017
The support by Giovani dos Santos lifted the LA Galaxy to a 4-2 win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the 63rd all-time Cali Clasico at Avaya Stadium Saturday night
The Mexican international, who also scored from the penalty spot in the first half, put the finishing touches on the win when he latched onto a sublime ball by Romain Alessandrini and slid in to head past David Bingham in the 64th minute.
There were plenty of fireworks in a five-goal first-half that saw the visitors go into the break with a 3-2 lead.
Chris Wondolowski got the scoring started with a first-time volley from a Danny Hoesen cross in the 10th minute. Joao Pedro leveled nine minutes later, before dos Santos put the Galaxy in front, 2-1. Hoesen opened his account for the Quakes two minutes after that, and Victor Bernardez was unlucky to see a Bradley Diallo cross deflect off his head and into his own net one minute before halftime.

Arsenal's Wenger praises Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere, Joel Campbell in win
Arsenal came out victorious 2-1 over the MLS All-Stars on Thursday night at Avaya Stadium. But this was no throwaway exhibition exercise according to Arsene Wenger.
As the Gunners head into the upcoming Premier League season, the club's manager had plenty to evaluate.
“The contacts are a bit less strong and it’s a more friendly game than it is usually when you play against a club,” Wenger said of the friendly. “On the other hand, you have top-quality players on the pitch together and you feel like every time you make a mistake they can take advantage of it.”
So just how many mistakes did Arsenal make? Besides allowing a goal from longtime foe Didier Drogba, formerly of Chelsea and currently of the Montreal Impact, not too many, Wenger said.
“In my team I believe what is important for us is in this kind of game is to analyze what aspect of our game we do well,” he said. “I felt that in the first half we had a good balance between keeping possession and going very quickly on transition in behind, and we had good penetrating runs in the final third.”
He praised first-half performances particularly by Jack Wilshere, Joel Campbell (who converted a PK, the game’s first goal), and even a character some Arsenal fans love to hate: Theo Walcott.
The main takeaway for Wenger, though, was that the upcoming kids are alright. “It’s a good opportunity as well to see many young players that we educate,” Wenger said, “and that was positive.”

The San Jose Earthquakes scored two first half goals and hung on through a powerful late rally to beat the defending MLS Cup champions Portland Timbers at Avaya Stadium on Sunday.
"It was a good game," said Earthquakes head coach Dominic Kinnear. "I thought both teams played well and created chances on both sides of the ball. We just made a few more defensive plays at the end there."
Chris Wondolowski scored first, his second of the season, and Quincy Amarikwa scored next, on the strike of halftime.
The victory pushed the Earthquakes to the top of the MLS Western Conference, tied with Sporting Kansas City on points with six. The Timbers dropped into mid-table with the loss.
"Wondo does what he does, the first look he gets," said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter, adding the Amarikwa's goal was "a goal out of nothing."
The Timbers had the first chance of the afternoon denied by the woodwork when in the 6th minute, Lucas Melano rattled shot of the crossbar from the right flank.
The Earthquakes weathered the early Timbers attack and scored first through none other than Wondolowski in the 30th minute. He redirected a cross from Anibal Godoy past Portland goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey for his second goal of the season.
Then, in first half stoppage time, a moment of excellence from Amarikwa doubled the Earthquakes advantage. After shielding off a loose ball on the San Jose side of the center line, the forward dribbled into space and raced toward the Ultras' end of Avaya Stadium. A quick look up revealed Kwarasey off his line, and Amarikwa lobbed a shot from 35 yards out the nestled into the back of the net. It was Amarikwa's first goal of the season and first goal at Avaya since rejoining the Earthquakes.
The Timbers closed the gap in the 89th minute when forward Jack McInerney flicked a shot into the goal after a header from Nat Borchers bounced around in the box.
The Timbers attacked San Jose in stoppage time as they looked for equalizing, but couldn't and were handed their first loss of the season.

Earthquakes Open Season with 1-0 Victory

The San Jose Earthquakes opened their 2016 Major League Soccer campaign with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday at Avaya Stadium behind Chris Wondolowski's second-half header.
Three Quakes players made their MLS debut during the match - midfielders Alberto Quintero and Matheus Silva and defender Kip Colvey.
The Earthquakes nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, as forward Quincy Amarikwa broke downfield to set up a one-on-one with Rapids goalkeeper Zac MacMath. Before Amarikwa could get his shot off, defender Jared Watts made a last-ditch tackle and swiped the ball from under his feet.
The Quakes took the lead within seconds of the start of the second half. Amarikwa sent a pass out wide to Quintero, who chipped the ball into the box. Wondolowski's header beat MacMath to the near post. It marked Wondolowski's 110th career MLS goal and Quintero's first career assist. Quintero is the first Earthquakes player to tally a goal or an assist in his MLS debut since Matias Perez Garcia scored against the LA Galaxy on August 8, 2014. Wondolowski scored the Quakes first goal of the season for the second straight year and third time in his career.
With the goal, the Quakes have now scored at least once in each of the past 14 matches dating back to August 8, 2015, the longest active streak in Major League Soccer.

Season Full of Disappointment for the San Jose Earthquakes
26/10/2015
The 2015 San Jose Earthquakes season is the club's first season playing in Avaya Stadium, their new soccer-specific stadium. A state of the art stadium with a European design that brings the fans as close as possible to the field and the players.
But something seams to be missing during the home games, the 12th player was not present and as a result the Quakes lost 5 home games and draw 4 times a total of 23 points lost at home. Only 13 points could have put the Quakes on top of the Western Conference standings and 5 could have put them in the playoffs.
The fans around the stadium are always busy doing all kinds of things except cheer the team. The luxury suites are full of people to busy eating and drinking and paying no attention to the game. One end of the stadium always bustling with bar customers and making trips to the food trucks and I'm sure to the bathrooms. The only exception are the ultras. The management has to find a solution to this problem.
Do home teams really have an advantage? Absolutely.
In their book "Scorecasting", Toby Moskowitz and Jon Wertheim helpfully compile the percentage of home games won by teams in all the major sports. Some data sets go back further than others ( MLB figures are since 1903; NFL figures are "only" from 1966; and MLS since 2002), but they are all large enough to be conclusive.
So it's hard to argue against the home-field advantage. In fact, Steve Levitt once wrote an academic paper about the wisdom of betting (shh!) on home underdogs
But why does that advantage exist?
There are a lot of theories to consider, including:
"Sleeping in your own bed" and "eating home cooking"
Better familiarity with the home field
Crowd support
During the regular season for a sport, in the interest of fairness, schedulers try to ensure that each team plays an equal number of home and away games. Thus, having home-field advantage for any particular regular-season game is largely due to random chance. However, in playoffs, home advantage is usually given to the team with the better regular-season record.
The results are no anomaly. MLS, for example, reports a home win ratio of 49.4 percent over a 15 year period, compared to just 26.5 percent away wins. In the crucial end-of-season playoff encounters, that home win percentage rises to a remarkable 59.4 percent, compared to just 19.8 percent away side victories. (MLSsoccer.com)
I hope the San Jose Earthquakes owners, management, coaching staff and players will find a solution to this problem before next season. Because all of the above along with the true fans deserve better record next year specially at home.
2 first goals of season sealed victory

The San Jose Earthquakes defeated the LA Galaxy 3-1 in the 2015 California Clasico at Stanford Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 50,422. The fourth-consecutive sellout at Stanford was also the largest crowd in the history of the California Clasico. San Jose improved to 4-1-4 in their last nine matches and 4-1-2 overall at home this season.San Jose nearly opened the scoring in the first minute of the match. Midfielder Matias Perez Garcia whipped in a corner kick and the ball found its way inside the six-yard box. Forward Chris Wondolowski was one of several Quakes around the ball and attempted to volley it past Galaxy keeper Jaime Penedo, but his shot was blocked by a last-ditch effort by the goalkeeper.
The Galaxy took a 1-0 lead on the right foot of Juninho in the 19th minute. A loose ball rolled out to Juninho about 30 yards from goal and he ripped a one-timed shot that dipped towards the bottom-left corner of the net. Quakes keeper David Bingham lunged to his left, but couldn't get enough on it to keep it out.
San Jose leveled the score line in the 28th minute. Perez Garcia held the ball near the edge of the penalty area and lost his defender with some nifty footwork. After creating space for himself, Perez Garcia played a ball across the box about waist high and Wondolowski volleyed a rocket past Penedo. It marked Wondolowski's Western Conference-leading ninth goal of the season and Perez Garcia's fifth assist.
The Quakes took the lead in the 53rd minute. Perez Garcia drove an in-swinging corner kick into the box and defender Clarence Goodson beat his man to the near post and headed it into the back of the net. It marked Goodson's first MLS goal since August 11, 2007 and his first as a member of the Earthquakes. It also marked Perez Garcia's second assist of the match.
San Jose doubled their advantage in 72nd minute. Second-half substitute midfielder Cordell Cato received a pass from midfielder Shea Salinas in the penalty area and proceeded to dribble around multiple defenders before driving a low left-footed strike past Penedo. It marked Cato's first goal of the year and first since September 7, 2014.
Over his last seven MLS matches, Perez Garcia has now registered six assists and a goal, which was named the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week in Week 16. Perez Garcia also tallied his fourth game-winning assist of the season, which ranks tops in Major League Soccer.
San Jose returns to action on Wednesday, July 1, when they host the LA Galaxy in the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at 7:30 p.m. at Avaya Stadium.

Wondolowski and Salinas deliver victory
16/5/2015
Goals in the 2nd half from Chris Wondolowski and Shea Salinas secured a 2-0 victory for the San Jose Earthquakes over 10-man Columbus Crew at Avaya stadium.
Columbus Crew started the game attacking, but had no success. The Quakes defense was able to stop their attempts.
Columbus were reduced to 10 men when Mohammed Saeid was shown his second yellow card for a poor challenge on Salinas.
In the second half, San Jose took the lead when Jordan Stewart sent a gift to Wondolowski who put it in the box past Clark.
The Quakes doubled their advantage as Salinas collected the ball past to him by Garcia on the edge of the box and drove his strike into the top corner.
Three points for the Earthquakes are enough for them to move above the Houston Dynamo back into fourth place in the Western Conference.

Earthquakes 3-2 Road Victory Over Sounders FC
The San Jose Earthquakes earned a 3-2 victory against Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field, despite playing nearly the entire second half a man down.
Seattle opened the scoring in the first minute of the match. Sounders defender Tyrone Mears had a shot on target from outside the penalty area, which was blocked by Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham. The loose ball fell to forward Clint Dempsey at the edge of the six-yard box, who headed it into the back of the net.
The Quakes nearly leveled the score in the ninth minute. Following a free kick by Matias Perez Garcia, midfielder Fatai Alashe, making his first MLS start, headed the ball across the front of net. Forward Chris Wondolowski rose to meet it, but his header caromed off the cross bar and was cleared out of danger.
San Jose equalized in the 13th minute. A cross from the right flank by defender Marvell Wynne was controlled by Wondolowski, who calmly proceeded to slot the ball into the bottom-right corner of the goal with his left foot.
The Earthquakes took a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute. After Sounders defender Brad Evans misplayed a header back towards his own net, Wondolowski took possession of the ball and blasted a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Stefan Frei. It marked Wondolowski's second goal of the match and ninth all-time against Seattle Sounders FC, the most among all players in MLS history.
Despite losing a player to a red card early in the second half, San Jose continued to put pressure on Seattle's goal, eventually doubling their lead in the 70th minute. Weaving past defenders and working a give-and-go with forward Adam Jahn, Innocent Emeghara, also making his first career MLS start, created space in the penalty area by faking a left-footed shot and cutting the ball back onto his right. He then curled the ball far post to earn his first MLS goal.
Seattle pulled within one goal in the 84th minute, when forward Obafemi Martins tapped in a ball across the six-yard box by midfielder Andy Rose.
Facing a barrage of shots and corner kicks late in the match, goalkeeper David Bingham and San Jose's defense stood tall and prevented a game-tying goal by Seattle.

LA Galaxy beat Revolution for record fifth MLS title
8/12/2014
Irish striker Robbie Keane grabbed an extra-time winner as LA Galaxy won a record fifth Major League Soccer title with a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution in Sunday's championship-deciding MLS Cup.
Keane, voted the league's Most Valuable Player, gave the Galaxy the victory after New England's Chris Tierney had cancelled out Gyasi Zardes' 52nd minute opener for LA.
With the loss, the Revolution's miserable record in title games continued as they were condemned to a fifth defeat in their fifth MLS Cup appearance.
The game marked MLS and U.S. national team all-time top scorer Landon Donovan's final game before his retirement.
In a scrappy encounter, Swedish midfielder Stefan Ishizaki floated a cross to the back post to Zardes who, despite the attentions of two New England defenders, brought the ball down and found the bottom corner of the net with a low shot.
New England forced the game into extra time though when substitute Patrick Mullins picked out Chris Tierney's run into the area and the left-back confidently drove home.
Both teams looked tired in extra time and the outcome was decided with a simple long ball down the middle from Marcelo Sarvas which Keane raced on to and completed with a characteristically calm finish.

"Both Avaya and the Earthquakes share a commitment to innovation that is the hallmark of Silicon Valley. By partnering with a leader in the technology industry, we believe that Avaya Stadium will deliver fans one of the most engaging and technologically-advanced experiences in professional sports."
The agreement between Avaya and the Earthquakes offers the two locally-based organizations the opportunity to build greater community around the rapidly growing interest in soccer and become a showcase for the convergence of sports, technology and sponsorship on a larger stage.
"Avaya and the San Jose Earthquakes are truly a natural fit, sharing not only similar values, but also parallel business objectives," said Pierre-Paul Allard, Senior Vice President Worldwide Sales and President of Global Field Operations for Avaya. Earthquakes end Road Trip with 2-0 Loss Against Real Salt Lake
11/10/2014
The San Jose Earthquakes closed their two-game road trip with a 2-0 loss against Real Salt Lake on Saturday at a sold-out Rio Tinto Stadium.
The Earthquakes were shorthanded for the second consecutive game, suiting up just 17 players due to international duty and injuries. Additionally, San Jose wrapped up a stretch of three games in eight days, two of which were on the road.

Beckerman stepped over the shot and watched it roll into the lower corner past the outstretched arms of Busch for Grabavoy's second goal of the season.
The hosts doubled their lead five minutes later on a corner kick. Luke Mulholland sent an in-swinger from the near sideline that Sebastian Velasquez deposited in the back of the net with a leaping volley for his first career regular season goal with RSL.
Busch ended the night with seven saves, moving him to within three of Joe Cannon's club record 137 set in 2000.

Portland Timbers killed San Jose Earthquakes playoff hopes
5/10/2014
Another loss was awaiting the 10,525 fans at Buck Shaw last night. The Earthquakes ended their run to the MLS Cup with a loss 2-1 to the Portland Timbers.
Chris Wondolowski scored the first goal of the game to give the Quakes the lead, but the Timbers scored 2 goals within three minutes to summarize the way the 2014 season for the Quakes.
San Jose has not won a game in two months “11 games”
Jon Busch agreed that tough luck had a lot to do with the loss “ We did so much hard work guys are defending their tails off, but that’s the way the season’s going,” he said. “The first one gets deflected, and loops over [me], the second one gets a double deflection. You can’t do anything. It sucks, but that’s the way it’s going now.
“Portland’s a good team, but to give up two deflection goals is the story of our season,” Quakes defender Jason Hernandez said after the game. “I’d love to have some deflection goals go in for us. It feels like we’ve been on the wrong end of things a lot of the year, and a lot of good work and a lot of good fighting in front of our home fans was for naught because of two deflection goals.
"They say you make your own luck, but we’re doing everything we can and we can’t get our head above water. It’s very frustrating.”
“It’s probably about pride right now,” Coach Mark Watson said. “It’s about your character. Every time we step on the practice field, every time we step on the field for a game, you do your best. You work as hard as you can, you fight for this club and I have no doubt our guys will do that right to the end of the season.”
2015 and the new stadium
“It’s such a big year with the stadium coming in and us trying to turn the page to a new chapter as far as this club and this organization is concerned," Hernandez said. "It’s very important. All of us, we’re fighting for jobs, and we need to approach it that way; that these last four games are the most important games of the season.”

Inconsistency is the name of the game for the San Jose Earthquakes
16/8/2014
At home with an almost sold out stadium the Quakes made history by losing 0-5 in the worst league loss in the franchise’s history.Tesho Akindele scored three goals and Fabian Castillo added two for FC Dallas' Saturday night at Santa Clara the home of the San Jose Earthquakes.
Chris Wondolowski had a chance to score a goal just before halftime, but his penalty kick sailed over the crossbar.
Coach Mark Watson said :“We’ll spend a lot of time going over that, because it’s very poor and it’s very disappointing. I thought this team was in a good moment." “I’ve got to digest this and look at the video,”
“We’ve got to throw this one away,” Busch said. “It’s embarrassing. I’m embarrassed. Every one of us should be embarrassed. If I was a fan, I would be pissed off with that performance from every single one of us tonight. We’ve been on a roll and that was a kick in the nuts. It can’t happen again. It’s embarrassing.”Jon Busch was very frank : “They kicked our ass from minute one to minute 90.”

Landon Donovan will conclude an amazing career at the end of this season.

Landon Donovan Facebook announcement
After careful deliberation and after many conversations with those closest to me, I have decided that this will be my last season as a professional soccer player.
I don't write these words lightly and this day carries mixed emotions for me. I am sad to leave a profession that has brought me so much joy. I will miss all of the teammates who helped me create so many incredible memories on-the-field, and who I have shared many wonderful experiences with off-the-field. I will miss my coaches, at both the club and national team levels, who have helped me develop throughout my career and helped make me the player I am today. However, after spending half my life as a professional soccer player, I also am excited to begin a new chapter and pursue other opportunities that will challenge me and allow me to grow as a person.
There are so many people I want to thank who have inspired me, guided me and helped me on this incredible journey. I simply could not have accomplished what I did during my playing career without an overwhelming amount of support from my family, my friends and many others. I plan to express my gratitude to everyone in a more detailed manner at a later date; however, for now, I want to single out the fans. You are the lifeblood of this sport and, without you, none of us would be fortunate to call ourselves professional soccer players in MLS.
I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have played a role in the remarkable growth of MLS and US Soccer during my playing career. And while my career as a player will soon be over, rest assured I will stay connected on many levels to the beautiful game.
As we enter a transformative time for the sport, I will do everything I can to help the continued growth of soccer in the United States. I look forward to making a difference, pursuing my passions and meeting all of you along the way in this next phase of my life.
With gratitude,
Landon

San Jose Earthquakes lose to L A Galaxy and deservedly so
28/6/2014
History did not repeat itself at Stanford stadium where in the last two meetings between the Quakes and L A Galaxy the San Jose Earthquakes came back from a deficit to win. The fact that the stadium was filled to the rim with 50,006 fans during the World Cup fever did not seem to make the Quakes players play to win.
The quakes lacked the experience of forward Chris Wondolowski who was on national team duty in Brazil. Preparing for Tuesday’s World Cup match against Belgium, center back Victor Bernardez was still recovering from his World Cup play for Honduras, and the team’s leading assist man, Shea Salinas, was battling a lower abdominal muscle issue that has plagued him all season. Just minutes before kick off, center back Clarence Goodson was added to the list of missing starters when he pulled his groin during warm ups.
Yannick Djalo and Cordell Cato did a good job but Djalo was pulled in the 73rd minute. Injuries have limited Djalo to playing a full 90 minutes only once so far this season.
“He’s been a frustrating one for us because he’s very dynamic and as you can see on the field he’s a very good player,” Watson said. “He’s got great feet, he gets past people, and he really changes our team when he’s on the field. Once again he had a little something that forced him to come out of the game tonight and hopefully we can heal him up for Wednesday and for the future because we want him on the field.”
Despite all the injuries the Quakes can point to, however, Cordell Cato summed it up best: “It’s a team game. Who’s ever in, got to perform. There’s not a lot more pressure than before, it’s the same. You have to perform.”
A goal from Gyasi Zardes gave the Galaxy three points and a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes as the team returned to league play.

San Jose Earthquakes Top FC Dallas 2-1
10/5/2014
Veteran Jon Busch comes to the rescue as San Jose Earthquakes survive Dallas. He spent the last 45 minutes defending with only nine players against a FC Dallas fierce attack.
“The second half was just about sticking together, defending, and seeing if we could see the game out,” Quakes coach Mark Watson said. “I’m really proud of our guys, to see the effort and commitment, under extreme pressure, to get the points.... Buschy was great tonight. He showed his real quality and class again.”
The 37-year-old, who became the seventh goalkeeper in MLS history to reach 1,000 career saves, scrambled across and off his line on multiple occasions to help keep the visitors at bay, extending San Jose’s home unbeaten streak to three matches. That’s a huge boost for a club that’s set to potentially lose Clarence Goodson, Chris Wondolowsk, and already-called-in Victor Bernardez to World Cup duty for the next four matches, at a minimum.
Cordell Cato gave the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, but a red card to Shea Salinas in the 45th minute left the home side down a man for the entire second half.
The winning goal in the 73rd minute came when Sam Cronin sent a free kick into the box where FC Dallas substitute David Texeira deflected the ball into the net while trying to shield Chris Wondolowski from the play.
Dallas pulled one back three minutes later on a spectacular free kick from the top of the box by Brazilian left back Michel. However, the Earthquakes’ defense regrouped and kept three points with a tenacious group effort. Busch ended the night with four saves and faced a total of 20 shots, five of which were on target.
The Earthquakes improved their home-unbeaten streak against FC Dallas to six games. They are 4-0-2 during that stretch.
San Jose returns to action on Saturday, May 17 against Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.

2-1 Loss for Earthquakes in a rainy match against Revolution
29/3/2014
It was a rainy game Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium where the San Jose Earthquakes took on the New England Revolution. The final score was 2-1 Revolution with Wondolowski scoring the only Earthquake’s goal of the night late into the second half, bringing his record for the season up to 2 goals.
Coach Mark Watson reflected on the game saying “I thought we played a poor first half. We came out in the second half, scored the equalizer and had all the momentum at one point. They caught us on the counter attack and won the game. It was very disappointing.” The counter attack goal remains controversial because it was played before the whistle was blown. The referee allowed the Revolution to start before the Earthquakes had a chance to react to the foul. They were caught off-guard and it was a bad call on behalf of the referees in a series of bad calls and no-calls throughout the game.
This match marked midfielder Yannick Djalo’s Earthquakes debut. He stated “as I was warming up, I heard a lot of emotion from the stands. It was emotional while I ran on and I wanted to give back to them by helping us win. Unfortunately, tonight was not that night.” Despite the loss, Djalo’s debut remained a highlight of the game. He brought a refreshing energy to the team late into the second half.
The Earthquakes have a bye next weekend but face Columbus Crew on Sunday April 13th at Buck Shaw Stadium 12 noon PT.

San Jose Earthquakes excited about "dynamic" Yannick Djalo, may make debut vs. New England
29/3/2014
It took a couple of weeks for San Jose Earthquakes newcomer Yannick Djalóto get his visa paperwork properly processed.
On Saturday against the New England Revolution (10:30 pm ET; MLS Live), Quakes fans are likely to see just what the hotly anticipated Portuguese winger can bring to the club.
“I’d say we’re hopeful he will play some part of the game,” San Jose coach Mark Watson told reporters after training Friday.
This week marked the first time Djaló has finally had a full block of training with the Quakes, whose busy match schedule this month has scrambled and often truncated their practice routine. That could mean an MLS debut off the bench for the 27-year-old, who arrived earlier this month on a one-year loan from Portuguese side Benfica.
“I feel very good, I feel very comfortable here,” Djaló told MLSsoccer.com Friday via a translator. “It’s a great group of people that welcomed me very easily. I feel like a good part of the group, so it’s easy to integrate into this team. …

Earthquakes Acquire S.L. Benfica Winger Yannick Djalo on Loan
10/3/2014
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has acquired S.L. Benfica midfielder Yannick Djalo on loan for the 2014 season pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Djalo, 27, is a speedy winger with seven years of experience in Portugal’s first division and one in France’s Ligue 1. He has a goal to his credit in UEFA Champions League play and won multiple cups with Sporting Lisbon during his five full seasons there.
“We’re excited to announce the signing of Yannick,” said Earthquakes head coach Mark Watson. “There was a lot of work and time spent scouting in the offseason, and we feel like we have a very good player in Yannick. He adds a versatile, attacking dimension to our team. He can operate as an attacking midfielder, but also has the pace to get behind defenders.”
Born in Guinea-Bissau, Djalo moved to Lisbon and began his career in Sporting Lisbon’s renowned youth academy, working his way up to the first team for the start of the 2006-07 season. After making his Portuguese league debut on Sept. 16, 2006, Djalo went on to score 31 goals in 146 matches in all competitions for Sporting. He helped them win Portuguese Cups in 2006-07 and 2007-08 as well as Portuguese SuperCups in 2007 and 2008. During the 2008 SuperCup, Djalo scored both of Sporting’s goals in a 2-0 win against FC Porto.
Djalo joins the Earthquakes with 20 games of UEFA Champions League under his belt. He made his first UCL appearance in group play against Inter Milan of Italy on Sept. 12, 2006 at the age of 20. In 2008-09, he scored the game-winner in Sporting’s final group match against FC Basel to ensure passage to the Round of 16 where they were ousted by German giant Bayern Munich. In addition to UCL experience, Djalo also appeared in 17 Europa Cup matches for Sporting.
“I’m excited to bring in a player of Yannick’s quality. His attacking flare and experience should be a welcome addition to the team,” said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle.
Djalo left Sporting in the middle of the 2011-12 season and signed with Benfica on January 31, 2012. He went on to play in five games for Benfica before a loan deal was reached sending him to Toulouse FC in France for the 2012-13 campaign. While in France, Djalo saw action in 20 games and scored in a Coupe de la Ligue match.
Internationally, Djalo has one cap for Portugal’s national team. He also represented their youth squads at all levels, including three appearances at the 2007 U-21 European Championship.

Earthquakes Sign Former Bayern Munich Defender Andreas Gorlitz
4/3/2014
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has signed former Bayern Munich right back Andreas Gorlitz pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and international transfer certificate. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Andreas is an experienced veteran that has played at the highest level in Germany and with the German national team,” said Earthquakes head coach Mark Watson. “He has trained with us over the past month and has shown that he will be a good addition to our squad. We are happy to have him in San Jose.”
Gorlitz, 32, joins the Earthquakes after 12 years in the German professional ranks. He began his career with TSV 1860 Munchen in 2001 and made 37 Bundesliga appearances over his three seasons there. After being relegated at the end of the 2003-04 campaign, 1860 Munchen transferred Gorlitz to Bayern Munich. His first year with the German giants looked like a breakout for the attack-minded right back after starting five games, making two UEFA Champions League appearances and earning a pair of national team caps. However, a torn anterior-cruciate ligament in a Champions League match against Juventus sidelined him until 2006.
Gorlitz returned to action for Bayern Munich II, making 21 appearances before working his way back to first team action in 2006-07. His next move was a loan with Karlsruher SC from 2007-09, paving the way for a brief return to Bayern for the 2009-10 season, his last in Munich. Gorlitz spent the next three seasons with FC Ingolstadt 04. Gorlitz made 63 appearances for Die Schanzer and was a regular starter during his first two seasons before playing out his contract and making his way to the Earthquakes.
“Andreas is an excellent right back with a ton of experience. He’s great at getting forward and we’re excited to have him join the club,” said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle.
Internationally, Gorlitz made two appearances for Germany’s senior team. He debuted as a second half substitute in a friendly against Brazil on Sept. 8, 2004 and went a full 90 against Iran on Oct. 9, 2004. He also saw action in the youth ranks, earning a spot on Germany’s 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup squad and suiting up for the U-21s at the 2004 European Championship.

Sporting Kansas City win penalty shootout
In coldest MLS Cup Final ever
9/12/2013
Sporting Kansas City are the new MLS Cup Champions, at the coldest edition of the championship match in its 18-years.

In the 52nd minute when Real Salt Lake's Costa Rican striker Álvaro Saborío broke the deadlock. The highlight of the goal was the no-look pass that Kyle Beckerman produced to set it up:
French defender Aurélien Collin equalized with a header in the 75th minute in front of home fans.
With a scoreline of 1-1 after 120 minutes, the game went to penalties..
The penalties went to ten rounds each team misses three before Jamaican defender Lovel Palmer hit the bar with the 20th spot kick, gifting KC their second MLS Cup.

Earthquakes Forward Chris Wondolowski Called to United States National Team Duty
11/11/2013
San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski was among 23 players called to United States Men’s National Team duty by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Monday.
The U.S. will face Scotland on Nov. 15 at Hampden Park in Glasgow (12 p.m. PT / ESPN2, UniMas), then four days later will play Austria for the first time since 1998 when they meet at Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna (11:45 p.m. PT / NBC Sports Network, UniMas). Players departed Monday for Glasgow.
"We are excited about the group we have coming in and the big opportunity to finish the year on a high note," said Klinsmann. "We want to use these games to prove a point and see that our players are continuing to improve as we build towards the World Cup. The results in MLS wound up fitting in with our roster plans, so we didn't need to call in any guys who are still in the playoffs. There are some injuries issues that now give other players the chance to step up."
Wondolowski, 30, was San Jose’s leading scorer in 2013 with 13 goals in all competitions. The Danville native has 15 caps with the United States. He was part of the Americans’ CONCACAF Gold Cup championship run in July, banging home five goals to share the tournament’s Golden Boot award with teammate Landon Donovan and Panama’s Gabriel Torres.
The USA finished in first place in qualifying in the CONCACAF region for the third straight time, earning a trip to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the process. After completing a team-record 12-game winning streak, the U.S. has won 16 games in 2013, already a team high for a calendar year.
U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION:
Goalkeepers (3): Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Tim Howard (Everton), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire).
Defenders (7): DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Eric Lichaj (Nottingham Forest), Michael Orozco (Puebla).
Midfielders (7): Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Roma), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Brek Shea (Stoke City).
Forwards (6): Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes).

Earthquakes sign Mark Watson as club's head coach
Oct 30, 2013
The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has named Mark Watson as its head coach. Watson inked a multi-year contract following his 11-5-3 finish as the club’s interim head coach in 2013. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Watson, 43, had the best points-per-game average in the league after taking over on June 7 at 1.89 ppg. The Earthquakes narrowly missed the MLS Cup Playoffs, tying the Colorado Rapids for the fifth and final spot in the Western Conference, only to fall short due to the league's second tiebreaker. He also led the club to the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals where they will face Toluca (Mexico) next March.
“We’re excited to sign Mark to a multi-year contract after his tremendous finish to the 2013 season,” said Earthquakes president Dave Kaval. “Mark inherited an adverse situation, but he found a way to qualify the club for the CONCACAF Champions League Quarterfinals and nearly rallied us to an MLS Cup Playoff berth. We look forward to having Mark on our sideline as we continue to move toward a new era of Earthquakes soccer.”

Earthquakes Close Season with a win over FC Dallas
Oct 26, 2013
The San Jose Earthquakes won their season finale 2-1 against FC Dallas on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium with Walter Martinez and Chris Wondolowski providing the firepower. The game also served as a send-off for MLS Original, Ramiro Corrales, who played the final game of his career after 18-seasons of professional soccer.
Longtime Earthquakes captain Corrales started and played 71 minutes in his final professional game. San Jose teammates wore jerseys from Corrales’ 18 seasons as a player to commemorate him during a special ceremony before the match. He retires as the all-time leader in club history with 250 appearances, 20,188 minutes played and 228 starts.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH MARK WATSON
On the game:
“We knew what we had to do before the game to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs, but it was nice just to finish the season with a positive performance. I thought the game was a great tribute to our fans and also to Ramiro Corrales. Also, to possibly be level with a team that’s going to make the playoffs is an accomplishment and showed just how close we were.”
On Ramiro Corrales:
“He’s been great. He’s the last of the originals, so I thought it was important that he play a part in the game. He can still play at a high level. He truly is a legend and I’m glad the club was able to honor him today.”
On Chris Wondolowski’s goal:
“We had some good stuff tonight. It wasn’t for 90 minutes, but I thought we had moments where we moved the ball really well. It’s nice when you have some of those combination plays, and who better to get on the end of it than Chris Wondolowski? He’s such a great finisher and it was nice to see him score in the final game of the season."

Earthquakes Remain in MLS Cup Playoff Hunt After 1-0 Win Against Colorado Rapids
10/10/2013
Wondolowski kept the Earthquakes’ Playoff hopes alive with a goal in the 69th-minute, leading San Jose to a 1-0 win against the Rapids on Wednesday in front of a sold-out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium.
The Earthquakes moved to within one point of the Rapids and LA Galaxy for a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs. San Jose has two games remaining in the regular season, including a trip to the the Galaxy on Sunday, Oct. 20
Wondolowski headed home his 10th goal of the season off a Shea Salinas corner kick. The marker was his 33rd career game winner, tying him for No. 3 in MLS history with Ante Razov. He also became the 11th player in league history to record double-digit goals in four consecutive seasons.
The Earthquakes would have found the net sooner if not for a gritty defensive effort from the Rapids. Alan Gordon clipped the post with a header in the ninth minute and then defender Drew Moor went to the ground to block point-blank shots from Wondolowski and Gordon on the Rapids’ goal line midway through the second half. Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin also made a diving one-handed save to deny Wondolowski at the near post in the 69th minute, just before the corner kick that netted the eventual winner.

Manchester City and New York Yankees to purchase new MLS side
May 21, 2013
Manchester City have teamed up with baseball giants the New York Yankees to form a new franchise in Major League Soccer.
The new side, known as New York City Football Club, will join the US league for the 2015-16 season after a deal worth around 100m US dollars (£66m) was concluded.
The two clubs and MLS announced the partnership after a meeting at MLS headquarters in central New York.
"New York is a legendary sports town, as well as a thriving global city with a rapidly expanding soccer fanbase."
Ferran Soriano
City hope the arrangement will help to expand their profile in the United States, as well as provide a potential extra source of income and players.
City chief executive Ferran Soriano said: "New York is a legendary sports town, as well as a thriving global city with a rapidly expanding soccer fanbase.
"We are thrilled to contribute to the energy and growth of New York City soccer.
"In the Yankees, we have found the absolute best partner for developing a world-class sports organisation and a winning team that will carry the New York City Football Club name with pride."
City will be the majority owner of the new venture, with the Yankees, who previously had a commercial agreement with Manchester United, an active member of the ownership group.
Discussions are under way over the construction of a new stadium at Flushing Meadows in the Queens borough of the city, though the club would play at a temporary location until a development was completed.
MLS commissioner Don Garber said: "We proudly welcome two of the most prestigious global sports organisations to Major League Soccer.
"This is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country."
City are currently in the US ahead of post-season friendlies against Chelsea in St Louis and New York.

All Time Leading Goalscorer "Chris Wondolowski"
The San Jose Earthquakes snapped a six- match winless run on Wednesday after Chris Wondolowski scored in the 81st minute to lift the 'Quakes to a 2-1 win over Toronto FC at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Toronto FC went a goal up in the 14th minute when after O'Dea served a long set piece into the area, Henry nodded the ball on to Braun, who scored from close range to issue the Reds yet another cruel sliver of hope.
The Quakes were on level terms in the 48th when Jahn made the most of the chance Wondo gave him as he danced past a defender inside the box and beat goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
Even though the Quakes won the game, they lacked discipline; they lacked accuracy in passing, and kept the ball up in the air. From the beginning of this season the Quakes have been playing with emotions and not with their wits. Some of the players have been playing too rough, some have been arguing too much and some have been verbally abusive. The team paid the price by losing and tying games they could have won easily.
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FRANK YALLOP
On the team’s halftime adjustment:
“It was great to see us win a game where we were a goal down. I made sure that [the boys] knew that you can’t let these types of games slip by. At halftime, I think I got their attention. I felt that I needed to let them know the urgency of getting a win tonight. I thought the response in the second half was fantastic. We dominated the second half and I felt very comfortable that we were going to get back in the game. I always felt we had a chance to get the winner after [Adam Jahn] scored the other one a bit earlier. I’m very happy with the fighting spirit within our squad.”
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER WALTER MARTINEZ
On first start with club:
“It felt good to be out there. The coaches did a great job of keeping me in shape and I was more than comfortable to play every minute. I’ve been eager to play with this unit. This is a strong club with great players and I see how hard they work every day. Now we are taking our good play on the road to play a great Seattle Sounders FC side and I will remain ready to play whichever role is asked of my coaches, starting or off the bench.”
On halftime adjustments:
“Coach [Frank] Yallop called us all out, but he did it in a professional manner. He spoke to us like men, with respect. He called us out as a group and as a group we responded. That was clear in the second half as we played for the win even when we were down a goal and we ultimately got the win. His demeanor at halftime was the difference in our play.”

The Quakes had a slight advantage in the first half, as Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was called into action for 2 of sharp saves from Steven Lenhart and later Chris Wondolowski.
Portland, got on the board first. Diego Chara's through ball was cut out with a slide tackle by Steven Beitashour, but the ball popped up for Diego Valeri to volley home and give his side a 1-0 lead.
Earthquakes substitute Adam Jahn found the ball about 15 yards out and drilled a shot into the upper right corner of the goal past Ricketts to tie the game up 1-1 at the 92nd minute.
Frank Yallop Earthquakes head coach was quoted saying
“We had enough chances to win the game and I thought we deserved to win. It wasn’t the prettiest game to be honest but we dug deep and got a point. That was important for us.”
“For us not to score a goal in this game would not have been good with the quality of chances that we had. We had at least four good looks before the goal. Adam Jahn had another good finish and he is making me look good right now. He has done well for a young player. He didn't get in the past couple of games and tonight he proved again that he is a pretty good player.”
Caleb Porter Timbers head coach thoughts
“We leave a little disappointed because we had three points in our hands. But when the dust settles, it’s still a point on the road. If you look at the two-game series against San Jose, we make up three points. It was tough to give the goal away at the end, but they’re a tough team. [Adam] Jahn got loose and found the ball and that’s all they needed. I’m proud of my guys and I thought we managed certain parts very well.”
“That’s soccer, it’s part of the game. San Jose ties that into their game. With balls bouncing around and bodies banging around, it’s going to happen. Against San Jose you have to be up for what they will throw your way for 90 minutes.”
EARTHQUAKES RULE IGNORANCE REASON FOR DRAW VS WHITECAPS

Chris Wondolowski opened the scoring for the Quakes in the 18th minute before Corey Hertzog levelled just after the hour-mark.
The goal came in about in bizarre fashion as two San Jose players, forward Alan Gordon and defender Victor Bernardez, were off the pitch changing their boots at the time it occurred.
The laws of the game forced the two to remain on the sidelines until there was a stoppage but Hertzog managed to draw the Whitecaps level, taking full advantage of having two extra men which forced the Quakes to drop three valuable points and instead add just one to their pre-game tally of seven.
Frank Yallop admitted to ignorance after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Vancouver Whitecaps on the weekend.
“It was really poor on our behalf of not realizing that the rule is you can’t go back on the field [during the run of play]
Gordon also admitted it was a massive oversight: “It was really disappointing. I thought we had a great performance tonight and that’s what’s going to stick out. We lost a few points there because….it was a mistake.

San Jose Earthquakes Victorian over Seattle Sounders

Wondolowski's sizzling shot By Egyptkora.com
March 24, 2013
Victory and a clean sheet for the Quakes at home for the first time this year.
Wondolowski had the one shot that counted in first-half stoppage time, for his 2nd goal of the season. Wondo kicked the ball from outside the box, sending a sizzling shot that rested in the net after clipping the post on the way in.
Justin Morrow and Victor Bernandez, pillars of the San Jose defence, were both missing in action due to their involvement with their national Teams. But the Quakes Defense was good not just for a victory but also a clean sheet.
The Sounders had one final excellent chance two minutes from time when Alonso cracked a free kick on goal from outside the box, but Busch was in position to make the save, and preserve three points for the Earthquakes.
Seattle, meanwhile, has yet to win a league match this season, sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference with just one point from three matches.

Jan Jose Earthquakes grabbed two late goals in a 2-1 victory

It was a slow start for the home side as New York went in front at the 17- minute mark. Thierry Henry's cross was deflected to the back post with a glancing header from a San Jose defender and Alexander arrived to fire home a low shot for his first goal with the Red Bulls.
The 'Quakes failed to make a shot on goal in the first half, but they were far more stubborn after the restart, eventually leveling the score in the 83rd minute. Jahn the rookie produced the equalizer, eclipsing Roy Miller's coverage to get on the end of Sam Cronin's delivery and place a diving half-volley off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
San Jose made a habit of producing late goals throughout the 2012 season, and the 'Quakes battled back in Sunday's affair to collect all three points behind Adam Jahn's equalizer and Chris Wondolowski's late penalty.
New York (0-1-1) has conceded five goals in two matches this season, four of which have come in the second half to deny the Red Bulls points. Mike Petke's side will look to rebound on Saturday when it hosts D.C. United at Red Bull Arena.
San Jose (1-1-0) will attempt to continue its winning form when it heads to Crew Stadium to take on the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

SJ Earthquakes Chris Wondolowski Named 2012 Volkswagen MLS MVP

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski on Thursday was unveiled as the 2012 Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player, culminating a shocking rise from 41st overall pick in the 2005 Supplemental Draft to best player in all of MLS.
The award recognizes a season which saw Wondolowski tie the MLS record for goals scored in a single season with 27 tallies. It was the third straight year that the 29-year-old has led the league in scoring, although he missed out on the Golden Boot in 2011 due to the assists tiebreaker, which gave the honor to D.C. United’s Dwayne De Rosario.
No tiebreakers were necessary for the 2012 MVP. Wondolowski, who grew up an Earthquakes fan and made his mark in the Reserve League, received the overwhelming majority of votes to beat out New York Red Bulls captain Thierry Henry, Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi and Houston Dynamo veteran Brad Davis — the first for a member of the Earthquakes.
